She was born on 20th September, 1934 in Rome as the daughter of the construction engineer Riccardo Scicolone and Romilda Villani. Her mother was a piano teacher and an aspirant actress. She has a younger sibling named Maria who was born in 1983. Her mother was never married by her father and was left after her sister was born. She along with her sister and mother then started living with her maternal grandmother in Pozzuoli. From her father’s side she has two younger half-siblings – Giuseppe and Giuliano.
Sophia found her love when she was of 15. She fell in love with renowned Italian film producer Carlo Ponti, Sr. who was 22 years senior to her. The two got married on 17th September, 1957, when Sophia was of 17. Carlo was still married to his former wife Giuliana Fiastri when the two married because divorce was not accepted in Italy at that time. The couple however annulled their marriage in 1962 to avoid the charges of bigamy. In 1965, Carlo divorced with her first wife under French law which allowed him to marry Sophia. Sophia and Carlo once again married on 9th April, 1966 and lived together until the death of Carlo in January, 2010. Following their marriage, both of them acquired French citizenship. She became mother with two sons of Carlo; Carlo Ponti, Jr. born in 1968 and Edoardo Ponti born in 1973.
