Born on 4th May, 1989, Rory is the only child of his parents – Gerry McIlroy and Rosie. He was born in Holywood, a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. Raised a Roman Catholic, Rory is self described as Irish-British. He holds a British passport and often plays from Britain but he is playing only for Ireland since mid-2014. Apart from his sports career, his love relationships have always kept him on the top of media. He was popularly known for being in a relationship with the Danish professional tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. They began dating in 2011 and got engaged on 31st December, 2013. It was weeks before their marriage that Rory called off their engagement. Rory then announced that the step he took was because he was not ready for the marriage while Caroline later revealed that Rory ended their relationship via short phone call and did not contact her ever again. Prior to dating Caroline, Rory was in a long term relationship with Holly Sweeney. They dated each other from 2003 to 2011. Shortly after breaking up with Caroline, Rory was reported to be in a relationship with Sasha Gale. He was also encountered with Irish model/actress/singer Nadia Forde but the relationship has not been confirmed.

Born and raised in Holywood, Northern Ireland, Rory was educated in his hometown. He received his primary education from the St. Patrick’s Primary School and got enrolled in Sullivan Upper School for higher education. Rory began playing golf at a very early age. He was introduced to the sport by his golfer father Gerry McIlroy. During his childhood, he was coached by his father who is himself very good at playing golf. When 2 years old Rory hit a 40-yard drive, his father realized that he could do something really better when he grows up. Rory then got enrolled at the Holywood Golf Club at the age of 7, becoming its youngest member. His father as well as his mother worked extra time to support his golf development. Before Rory began playing professionally, he took part in several local/amateur championships. During his amateur career, he has won Junior Ryder Cup, West of Ireland Championship, Irish Close Championship, European Amateur, etc. Rory began playing as a professional golfer at the age of 18. He has participated in various tournaments such as European Open, Omega European Masters, UBS Hong Kong Open, South African Open, WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, Dubai Desert Classic, and many more. He is a great achiever who has won a number of awards such as PGA Tour, PGA Player of the Year, Vardon Trophy, Byron Nelson Award, European Tour Golfer of the Year, Mark H. McCormack Award, etc. Having earned over 65 million USD throughout his career, he is currently the #1 golfer of the world.

Rory is not only a great golfer but a philanthropist too. He can be frequently seen participating in various charity programs that are held to raise fund for children in need. The ambassador of UNICEF Ireland is an active supporter of Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Small Steps Project and is also the founder of The Rory Foundation.
