Some countries all over the world have challenges with crime rate. You would not be able to visit these places without thinking about your safety.

The homicide rate is extremely high especially for tourists. The ten countries with the highest homicide rate in the world are:

1. Honduras

The Republic of Honduras is located in Central America. Geographically speaking, the country is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua to the west, southwest and southeast respectively.

The Pacific Ocean is towards the south. The country is also referred to as the Spanish Honduras to distinguish it from the British Honduras which is now known as Belize.

Honduras has a population of over 9 million people and a total area of about 112,492 square kilometers. This country is said to have the highest murder rate in the world at about 90.4 murders is 100,000 people.

This almost guarantees that one person is killed in every 1,000 people. Tourists are the prime target when it comes to crime and murder.

Honduras is a popular holiday destination as it is part of the western Caribbean zone. This explains why tourists are targeted. This high homicide and murder rate is attributed to the high drug and crime rates in the country.

2. Venezuela

Venezuela is a country located South America’s northern coast. It is bordered by Colombia, Brazil, Guyana, the ABC Dutch Caribbean islands and Trinidad and Tobago to the west, south, east, north and northeast respectively.

The country has a population of over 31 million people and covers 916,445 square kilometers in area. Venezuela has the second highest murder rate in the world.

In one year, more than 27,875 people are murdered. The country has a lot to offer in terms of tourist attractions. However, tourists are cautioned against visiting the country because of the high homicide rate.

In addition to that, kidnapping is very common in the country. This can be attributed to the poor economic and political environment in this country.

3. Belize

Belize is located in Central America. It is bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea on the north, south and west and on the east respectively.

The country is independent and was formerly known as British Honduras before the name was changed.

Belize has a total area of 22,966 square kilometers and an estimated population of 387,879 making it the least populated country in Central America.

Belize has so much to offer in terms of attractions but people are scared to go visit. This is attributed to the high homicide rate. 45 out of every 100,000 people are murdered every year.

For a nation with such a small population, this is very alarming. The crime and murder rates are largely attributed to gang violence in the country.

The most affected part of the country is Belize City. Half or close to half of all the murders recorded within the year occur in the city. As such, you should be weary of visiting this country.

4. El Salvador

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America. The country has a total area of 21,041 square kilometers and a population of about 6.4 million people.

People are advised against visiting El Salvador. The gang activity is considered one of the highest in the world. These gangs originated in Los Angeles and later spread transnationally to these areas.

In 2004, for example, almost two thirds of the murders were as a result of local gangs fighting for power and supremacy in the area.

5. Guatemala

People are weary of visiting the country because it has one of the highest violent crime rates in Latin America. Additionally, the homicide rate has been on the rise over the past few years, making it a trend that authorities have not dealt with. Action should be taken in order to curb the violence.
