Born in New Delhi, India to a science writer & journalist, Mukul Sharma and an actress & movie director, Aparna Sen, Konkona always aspired to be an actress. She has an older sister Kamalini Chatterjee. She is a granddaughter of Chidananda Dasgupta who is a scholar, film critic, writer, professor and co-founder of Calcutta Film Society. She attended the Modern High School for Girls and the Calcutta International School. In 2001, she graduated through the St. Stephen’s College with degree in English.
