Born Bernard Humphrey Hopkins Jr, he was raised in house stock in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he got in trouble with laws and crimes from an early age.

By the time he was thirteen, Bernard was mugging & fighting people and had already been stabbed three times. Four years later, at seventeen, he was sent to Graterford Prison for 18 years for nine felonies.

A troubled teenager who witnessed the killing of a fellow inmate while serving his sentence in the jail, Bernard discovered a new-found passion for boxing and kept his focus on being a pro.

After serving five years, he was released from jail in 1988 and decided to use professional boxing as a getaway from his early life. Around that time, he also converted to Islam.
