After the ratings dwindled for The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers in the late 1980s, Arsenio became one of the hosts to take over the show and because of the overwhelming response from the audience, the network hired him to host The Late Show which was consequently called The Arsenio Hall Show. The show became an overnight success in television and raised the ratings considerably.
While on the show, Arsenio competed for head to head with Jay Leno who hosted The Tonight Show during the same time. He made several other appearances in television such as hosting the MTV Video Music Awards and after the show ended in 1994, he began dabbling in acting.
Previously he has already appeared in movies like Amazon Women on the Moon, Coming to America, and Harlem Nights, winning the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor and American Comedy Award for his role in Coming to America. He was the star of the short-lived series Arsenio in 1997.
