Family and Personal Life
Goldberg was born in Manhattan, New York City to parents Robert James Johnson, Jr., who was a clergyman and Emma Harris, who worked as a nurse and a teacher. She along with her brother Clyde was solely raised by her mother in Chelsea Elliot Houses. Her ancestors had moved from Georgia, Florida, Palatka, and Virginia.

As a child, she went to local Catholic school and later enrolled at Washington Irving High School but couldn’t graduate as she dropped out from the school. She later earned a Ph.D. in literature and an honorary degree from Wilson College in Pennsylvania.
Unfortunately, she isn’t as successful in her personal life as much as she is in her career. Goldberg has been married thrice-first she wedded with Alvin Martin with whom she gave a birth to a daughter. The wedding bells rang again with David Claessen, a cinematographer which ran for two years and they got divorced in 1988. The last time she was married to Lyle Trachtenberg, a union organizer, however, the relationship ended within a year.
She has frequently admitted that she aggressively used to take drugs and at a point, she was even terrified to step out of the bed and use the toilet.
