Caryn Elaine Johnson is an American actress, author, comedian, and TV presenter, widely known as Whoopi Goldberg. She is the second black female actress to receive an Oscar as well as Academy Awards. Her name was nominated 13 times for Emmy for her TV works. Since 2007, she co-hosts the ABC’s talk show The View.

Personal and Family Life

Whoopi Goldberg was born on 13 November 1955 in Manhattan, New York. Her father was Robert James Johnson Jr., a Clergyman and mother was Emma Johnson, a nurse, and teacher. In her early childhood, she studied at a Catholic school in St. Columbia and dropped out of Washington Irving High School.

At present, Goldberg is living single life after divorce from three husbands. She stated that she has no plan to marry again. At first, she married Alvin Martin in 1973 and divorced in 1979. From her first marriage, she has a daughter named Alexander Martin. 

Later, she married cinematographer David Claessen in 1986 and after two years the couple separated. In 1994, she married for the third time with a union organizer, Lyle Trachtenberg. Just a year later, the couple divorced in 1995. 

 

Professional Career

Whoopi Goldberg started her career in East Germany in 1979 as a theater artist till 1981. Later, she got acting classes from Uta Hagen in NYC at the HB Studio. In 1982, she made her debut in William Farley film Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away

The following year, she composed one-woman show, The Spook Show, created with various monologues after which director Mike Nichols asked her to carry the program to Broadway. The show was renamed for Broadway as Whoopi Goldberg and conducted total 156 presentations sine 1984 to 1985 which was recorded and later presented by HBO in 1985.

Director Steven Spielberg offered her a lead role in the movie The Color Purple; released during the fall of 1985 and received positive critics and financial success. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards with Goldberg’s nomination for Best Actress. In 1986, she starred in Jumpin’ Jack Flash. She also featured in the movie Burglar (1986), Fatal Beauty (1987), and The Telephone (1988). 

She is notably recognized for her role as Guinan in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the late 80s, she involved in HBO’s Comic Relief along with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal.

Moreover, Goldberg starred in CBS comedy series Bagdad Café along with Jean Stapleton in 1990 and canceled after 2 seasons. Then after, she did numerous movies and TV series that includes Sesame Stress, A Different World, The Sunshine Boys, The Knight in Camelot, Foxbusters, and Liberty’s Kids. 

She served as a producer and voice artist for several movies and TV shows. She also anchored 34th Annual Grammy Awards in 1992 and 66th, 68th, 71st and 74th Academy Awards in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2002 respectively.

Till her tenure in Hollywood, she starred in copious films and documentaries such as Ghost, The Long walk, Sister Act, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, Theodore Rex, Bogus, Ghosts of Mississippi, Kingdom Come, Toy Story 3 and For Colored Girls.

Since September 4, 2007, she is working as moderator and co-anchor of daytime talk show The View. Goldberg is co-owner of medicinal marijuana producing company, Whoopi & Maya. She has also authored some books like Plum Fantastic, Whoopi's Big Book of Relationships, Book, Is It Me Or Is It Nuts Out There, Sugar Plum Ballerinas and so on.
