“The Axe Murder” Wanderlei Silva dominated the MMA world for decades with his nastily aggressive fighting style. He made his professional MMA debut on 1st of November 1996 beating Dilson Filho at Brazilian Vale Tudo Fighting organization. He fought 6 matches in 4 different IVC events, IVC 6, IVC 2, IVC 9 and IVC 10 in between 1997-1999. On 12th of August 2000, he took part in one Meca World Vale Tudo event, Meca 2, where he managed to knock out Todd Medina.
After continuous victory in IVC, Wanaderlei stepped into the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC Brazil: Ultimate Brazil, in a fought against Vitor Belfort and the match was his worst nightmare. He could not last more than 44 seconds in the ring. However he soon came into form and won against Tony Petarra on 7th of May, 1999 at UFC 20. The following year, he got opportunity to fight for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, but lost due to undisputed decision to Tito Ortiz. He entered in PRIDE on 12 September 1999 at the Pride 7 event against Carl Ognibene. In between 1999-2004, he won 18-straight matches in PRIDE, apart from a draw match against Mirko “Cro Cop”, Filipovic”. His name as a dreadful MMA fighter sprouted as he developed a victorious five year win track record in the PRIDE’s middle weight division. He fought against Japanese megastar Kazushi Sakuraba at Pride 13: Collision Course on 25th of March 2001. He won via TKO. At Pride 17: Championship Chaos, he won Pride middleweight championship after beating Sakuraba on 3rd of November. He again won against Sakurba for the 3rd time on 10th of August, 2003 at the Pride Total Elimination 2003. At Pride Final Conflict 2003, he faced Ouinton “Rampage” Jackson on 9th of November 2003 and won the match via TKO. His unstoppable victories eventually made him Pride’s 2003 tournament champion. At Pride 28: High Octane, he again won against Jackson. His undefeated five year streak with thirteen knockouts and eighteen wins in PRIDE was shattered by the Mark Hunt at the Pride Shockwave 2004. However his 2004 campaign got him “Fighter of the Years” honors from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and Sherdog. After losing to Ricardo Arona, his former status, Pride Middleweight Champion for the first time came under criticism as well as debate.
On 17th of August 2007, it was announced that Wanderlei Silva signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Following his recruitment he played a number of matches for UFC. In addition to his MMA career. He as well headed a martial arts training association “Wand Fight Team” in Los Vegas.
