This talented group of people has conquered the online world with their impressive content. One of such extremely talented people on YouTube is Tyler Oakley. Born on March 22, 1989, Tyler Oakley is a YouTuber, podcast host, entrepreneur and an active LGBT activist. The adorable twenty something is arguably the most popular male YouTuber of present time and rightly so because the videos uploaded on his YouTube channel Tyler Oakley are catered to over six and a half million subscribers making him one of the most subscribed YouTuber on the video sharing site.
Tyler is a native of Jackson, Michigan. His parents divorced when he was a toddler and he grew up with two families. He has two sisters of his own and from his parents’ second marriages he has two step brothers and three step sisters. In elementary school, he was active in drama and choir groups. During this time of his life, he was troubled with an eating disorder which he was able to take control over by the time he reached high school. When he was fourteen and a high school freshman, he came out as gay to his family and friends. He attended Michigan State University where he studied communications.
As a freshman at Michigan State University, in 2007 Tyler turned to YouTube to share his new life with his best friends from high school. He began uploading short videos of him on the site for his friends to see but was shocked to find that several other people were also watching his videos. By the time his college years ended, he already had a huge following on YouTube and an aspiration to work for something he really cared about. He and a close friend shortly moved to San Francisco where they dedicated their full time to making videos. By June of 2013, his channel had reached a million subscribers. As of March 2015, Tyler’s channel has over 6,690,975 subscribers and more than 381, 395, 479 total views. Today he is a globally renowned YouTube sensation and an inspiration to millions of young adults around the world. Tyler is specially admired for his efforts in LGBT activism, majorly in collaboration with the LGBT organization, The Trevor Project. He interned at the organization during his college summers and has since been active in raising over a million dollars for the project. He has been hosting TrevorLIVE since 2011 and since 2013 has been organizing a fundraiser on his birthday for them. In 2013, he was the co-host of YouTube series called Top That! alongside Becca Frucht. Tyler has been featured in more than a few magazines including The Advocate. He hosted his own tour called Tyler Oakley’s Slumber Party in several locations across the United States in 2014 and in 2015 the tour will be organized worldwide including cities like Dublin, London, Glasgow, Seattle, Vancouver, Melbourne, Brisbane and several others. Tyler also frequently appears as one of the YouTubers on The Fine Brothers’ YouTubers React series. In 2014, Tyler was awarded two Teen Choice Awards and two Streamy Awards. He also currently hosts a weekly podcast, Psychobabble, with Korey Kuhl which is free to listen on iTunes.
Tyler has collaborated with several other YouTubers for his videos such as Jenna Marbles, Mamrie Hart, Grace Helbig, Zoe Sugg, Miranda Sings, Troye Sivan, Connor Franta, Hannah Hart and Sawyer Hartman among others.
In addition to YouTube, Tyler is also very much popular on other social sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. As of March 2015, he has 3.93 million followers on Twitter, 3.8 million followers on Instagram and over two million Facebook fans.
