Raised in heavy hippy culture in Quincy, Massachusetts, her modern parents were supportive of her. She divided her time between Connecticut, Massachusetts and also lived in New York in her youth. She has Italian and German roots from her parents. Her grandfather is the late actor Melvyn Douglas with whom she bonded over his passion for theatre and history. Her career was also heavily influenced by her relationship with Martin Scorsese. She dated the film director for almost eight years in the 1990s and also appeared in his films. She has also been married once. She tied the knot with author Jonathan Axelrod on May 16, 1998 and they were married for over two years before separating. She became a step mother to his child during their marriage however they didn’t have children of their own.
