The Olivier Award nominated British born actress is no stranger to British theatre. Debbie Kurup has been keenly consistent with her appearance in theatre productions. She has made rounds in several theatres such as Savoy Theatre, Tricycle Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre, Prince of Wales Theatre, Union Theatre and Landor Theatre among others. Born on July 3, 1979, Debbie, over the years, has accumulated an overly impressive list of on-stage credits which has been improving progressively taking the British actress to new career heights. A few of her more popular theatre plays are The Bodyguard, Chicago, Tonight’s The Night, and West Side Story.
The theatre buff has been equipped with training from the North London Dance Studio. She attended the Edmonton County School before that and found herself drawn to the world of acting when she was 17. She didn’t have to struggle long to realize her newfound dream as a year later she got the chance to star in her very first theatre play on stage at the Savoy Theatre. Since then the actress has gone on to be a performer at several theatres around the United Kingdom and it looks like her daughter, Saffron, will be most definitely following in her mother’s steps. She shares her daughter with theatre actor Jason Pennycook with whom she appeared together in He’s Having a Baby on BBC One as well as BBC Three. The actress is also known in the film industry as the sibling of actress and singer Helen Kurup.
Most recently in 2013 Debbie was seen donning the character of Nicki Marron for The Bodyguard which she performed at the Adelphi Theatre in London. The character brought her nominations for the same award at two ceremonies. She was nominated for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical at the Olivier Awards and What’s On Stage Awards. The play is based on the hit movie The Bodyguard which was released in 1992 and starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. Debbie auditioned for the role in London. Her other popular roles include Velma Kelly in the play Chicago which she played in 2006 at the Adelphi Theatre as well. She found herself at the Victoria Palace for the role play of DeeDee in Tonight’s The Night by Ben Elton. The UK tour of the stage production of Rent also featured Debbie in the role of Mimi. Subsequently she appeared in West End for which she appeared on stage at the Prince of Wales, Theatre. At the same theatre, she appeared as a character in the popular West Side Story which incidentally is also the actress’s most favorite work. In 2007, she was critically acclaimed for her performance in the Landor Theatre stage in London for I Love You Because, playing Diana Bingley. She was seen once again seen as Velma Kelly in 2011. Sister Act and Chess in Concert Company are two of her other works. She also showcased her singing talent along with her acting in musicals. She is especially popular as a singer for Tonight’s The Night, Chess In Concert and Sister Act.
Debbie draws her acting influences from the likes of Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench and Allison Jeny and has been a lover of works from Michael Jackson since she was little. She also takes great interest in skiing and takes time out of her busy year to be with her family.
