Ashanti | Biography

Born in an artistic family to dance instructor mom and singer dad, Ashanti’s inclination towards the musical world did not come as a surprise to anyone. With her striking look and peculiar voice, Ashanti made place among her audiences as soon as she stepped into the limelight. She is famed for adding her unique R&B vocals to successful tracks by popular rappers, such as Ja Rule’s “Down 4 U” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv”. She has been entertaining her fans with her prolific works since 1994.

An American singer, record producer, songwriter, actress and dancer Ashanti took birth on 13th of 1980 in Glen Cove, New York, United States as Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas. She is a daughter of Tina Douglas and Thomas Douglas. She has a sister named SHIA Douglas. Growing up, she sang in church choir and took dance lessons. She joined Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center, where Ashanti studied diverse dance forms, including hip hop, modern, African, ballet, jazz and tap. She danced along with Senior Pro Ensemble at the Apollo Theater, Carnegie Hall, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Black Spectrum Theater and Avery Fisher Hall. At age three, she sang in a choir named “Having Some Fun and the Handsome Pigeons”. Her mother discovered her talent when she was twelve and began entering talent shows. She began to pen songs, whilst attending high school.

The talented and gorgeous singer is reported to be single currently. She began dating rapper Nelly in 2003. The couple parted their way in 2014. The couple first met at 2003 Grammy Awards’ press conference. They kept denying the rumor of their dating, ever after being spotted together in many events and encountered cuddling on beaches. Reportedly Nelly’s two children from his previous relations stated calling her their New York mother and Ashanti’s mother, Grandma. They briefly separated in 2007, however soon reconciled. In August 2009, she broke up for the 2nd time. In March 2010, the couple reconcile again. Other than Nelly, she dated Chink Santana and DeSean Jackson.

Ashanti was signed by Jive Records at age fourteen. After deciding not to launch any album through the recording label, she signed with Epic Records at age seventeen. However this also could not help her launch as singer. She afterward signed deal with AJM Records and soon was noticed by Irv Gotti, a multi-platinum producer of Murder Inc, who acknowledged her extraordinary singing as well as writing talents. He was the one who set the stage for Ashanti’s introduction to the musical industry. She gave her vocal as a guest for the track titled “How We Roll”. Ashanti afterward appeared in strings of duets. As a solo singer, she released her first track “Foolish”. She released her first album called “Ashanti” in 2002, which was a big hit. For the album, she garnered a Grammy Award, 8 Billboard Awards, the Soul Train Aretha Franklin Award for “Entertainer of the Year” and 2 American Music Awards. The following year, she released her followed up studio album “Chapter II”. On the Billboard 200 chart, the album debuted at number one. Whilst her subsequent albums, “Concrete Rose” and “The Declaration” could not live up to the expectation. In addition to the singing, she appeared in a number of movies and TV series, including  “Bride and Prejudice”, “Resident Evil Extinction”, “Christmas in the City”, “Mutant World”, “Stuck”, “Punk’d”, “Oxygen: Custom Concert”, “Las Vegas”, “Army Wives” and “Law & Order” to name a few. Her net worth is reported to be twenty million dollars.

Ashanti continues to be a rare find among American starlets, amiably embracing the limelight whilst really making a difference for the less fortunate. In the year 2003, she collaborated with LidRock as well as San Francisco-based FVPF in order to create awareness regarding the matter of domestic violence in National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. She as well helped in rising fund for sickle cell research, Southeast Asia tsunami disaster and the Hurricane Katrina victims. She is actively assisting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In September 2009, she with other artist Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Marian Carey, Rihanna, Sheryk Crow, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Natasha Bedingfield, Melissa Etheridge, Keyshia Cole, LeAnn Rimes, Leona Lewis, Carrie Underwood, Queen Elizabeth teamed-up for the track “Just Stand Up!”, the charity tune. Ashanti is affiliated with the Tupperware Brand, Jumpstart reading program and Girls Club of America.
